Jeff's Reading Fundraiser Page A Project of Read to a Child
I am sure that most of my family and friends reading this have been reading for as long as they can remember. And you likely have very fond memories of curling up with your children before bedtime, in a rocking chair or in a bed, and reading to them….and some of you like me, reading to your grandchildren.
I remember as a young child, frequently pulling a book from the library in our home and reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, My Side of the Mountain and other adventure stories that added to my sense of adventure, curiosity and love for the outdoors.
The simple reality is that today, a great number of kids don't even know what a library is let alone have the gift of being read to as a child.
Across the country, an alarmingly disparate percentage of low-income children read below basic level and nationwide, 80% of 4th graders from low-income families are not proficient in reading! And if you haven't Learned to Read, you cannot Read to Learn so it is no wonder that research shows that 2/3rds of these children end up on welfare or in jail.
But you can help!I recently joined Read to a Child which addresses this nationwide literacy epidemic. Research has shown that reading aloud to a child is the single most important factor in developing the skills to learn to read. For those children that do not receive this gift at home, Read to a Child steps in to fill the gap. Read to a Child enlists caring volunteers from more than 100 organizations across the country to dedicate their lunch hour once a week to visit elementary schools. These volunteer reading mentors are paired with a struggling young reader and during a school year (or multiple years) read aloud to the child, boosting the child's literacy skills and self-confidence, while fostering a love of reading.
By donating any amount, you can help Read to a Child in its mission to enable more children to develop a love of reading and help reverse the alarming cycles of illiteracy, incarceration and poverty in the US!
