HELP KIDS IN NEED LEARN TO READ A Project of Read to a Child
As school coordinators for the Read to a Child programs in Greater Hartford, everyday we see the growth and learning that young students can achieve when read to by adults. Each day, community volunteers spend their lunch hour in school reading aloud with young students to help build literacy skills. But, there are so many more children here in Hartford and New Britain that are not read aloud to regularly! These children fall behind in learning to read. Currently 80% of fourth graders from low-income families are not proficient in reading; a deficit that greatly hampers their ultimate academic, social, and lifetime success.
That's why we have joined in the Read to a Child's fifth annual online fundraising campaign "Help Kids in Need Love to Read" which seeks to raise $100,000 during National Reading Month in March.
- $25 puts a series of chapter books into a child's hands
- $50 provides screening and training of a volunteer
- $100 sponsors a year-end celebration and certificates for the children in the program
- $250 brings new books customized to children's interests and teacher requests to a school
